Originally the Naginata was a weapon used by the foot soldiers. Most Naginata had a curved-back blade and a tang made as long as possible, on which a long handle, for instance of copper or iron, was attached, which was firmly fitted with a spiral wrapping. They were used as weapons by walking foot soldiers to mow down men and horses.
